VALE: Bill McDonagh
It is with much sadness that we learned of the passing of MMuDS Life Member Bill McDonagh. Bill’s involvement in the performing arts started before MMuDS was founded but it was within MMuDS that his influence was strongest. Bill was involved in almost all elements. He was a performer who could also be seen up a tall ladder setting lights or setting up microphones. He built sets and in fact won a ZONTA award for his Sweeney Todd set while also being its Director. Bill also spent many years on the MMuDS committee and served several terms as MMuDS President. There were in fact very few things Bill did not do when it came to his years in MMuDS. His tireless work to bring the MMuDS dream of having a permanent home meant the Performing Arts Centre became a reality rather than just remaining a pipe dream. Bills had an infectious passion for the performing arts which infected a generation of MMuDS members which included a myopic young man who lacked even the smallest levels of self esteem. Bill could not have done any of this without his co collaborator in life Jeannie and they collaborated on almost all elements of their involvement in MMuDS. Both would be awarded MMuDS highest honour, Life Membership.
There is so much more I could write about Bill so many stories and anecdotes but you really needed to be there to appreciate them. Bill influenced the very culture of MMuDS and gave his support and encouragement to anybody who needed it. While Bill's direct involvement ended in 2006 with a glorious production of The Gondoliers he would often be seen at opening nights still with a kind and encouraging word for the cast and a twinkle in the eye. From that Myopic, no longer young man, thank you Bill for being my friend and believing in me. On behalf of The MMuDS Committee, our Members and your many MMuDS friends we send our deepest sympathy to Jeannie, your children and your extended family. Bill you have taken your final curtain call but your contribution and friendship will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace.
